History

The Ais Indians resided in the area in pre-Columbian times. Some historians believe Juan Ponce de Leon landed near Melbourne Beach in 1513 where he became the first European to set foot in Florida. Even though many historians dispute this claim, a statue of Ponce de Leon was erected in Melbourne Beach to commemorate his discovery.

In 1879, a hotel, the Oak Lodge, was built for researchers and naturalists on a 164 acre plot near what is now Aquarina.  The town was established in 1883 by a retired Union general but was not incorporated until 1923. Pineapples were grown in Melbourne Beach until 1895 when freezing weather wiped out crops and ended commercial farming.

The Melbourne Cause was constructed in 1921 connecting Melbourne Beach to the mainland. Prior the that, the only access to the mainland and back was via ferry that landed at the Melbourne Beach pier. The pier was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

One of the first buildings constructed in Melbourne Beach was the Community Chapel, built in 1892 and still stands today.
